Roy to head sericulture commission

  Ishita Roy, member secretary, Central Silk Board assumed charge as the Secretary General of International Sericultural Commission (ISC) on Tuesday.

The headquarters of the Commission, which is a prestigious inter-governmental organisation of silk producing countries, was shifted from Lyon to Bangalore.

Roy was elected to the top post after a closely contested election during the ISC Conference held at Cluj Napoca in Romania, on September 14, 2012.

ISC was instituted during 1960 based on an international treaty. The Louis Pasteur Award instituted by ISC is considered to the Nobel Prize of the silk industry.

With the shifting of the ISC headquarters to India, many developing countries in Asian and African regions have shown keen interest to become members, a Central Silk Board release stated.
