New Delhi: S N Venkata Rao, former Chief of Konkan Railway and a key architect of Indian Railways' modernisation, passed away in Bengaluru on Thursday.

Rao, IRSE (Indian Railway Service of Engineers) retired Advisor, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, was the main designer along with E Sreedharan, of Bengaluru Metro for Phase one and Phase two.

"His visionary contributions, including the Sakleshpur-Mangalore railway line and the Delhi Metro design, have shaped India's rail infrastructure in an enduring way," Minister of State for Railways V Somanna said his condolence message.

"His legacy and unparalleled contributions to Indian Railways will remain timeless and deeply revered, " Somanna said.
