A unique initiative this Saturday will offer participants a guided tour of five public libraries across the city. Called the Bengaluru Public Libraries Walk, the event aims to highlight the role of public libraries as essential, democratic spaces that are open and accessible to all. The event is free to participate.

The walk will begin at the library of Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan in Indiranagar and conclude at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) library in Sadashivanagar. These institutions are jointly organising the walk.

Participants will also be taken to the Mythic Society Library on Nrupathunga Road, the State Central Library in Cubbon Park, and the Alliance Française de Bangalore
Library in Vasanth Nagar. They will get to spend around 45 minutes at each location, where library staff will offer a guided tour, share insights into their collections and services, and allow them time to browse freely.

Preedip Balaji, one of the organisers from IIHS, explains, “This initiative aims to raise awareness about these institutions and support them, and advocate for more resources for the broader cultural sector — including archives, museums, and galleries.”

Now in its fourth edition, the walk has previously drawn a diverse crowd, including college students, young professionals, and middle-aged participants.

The attendees are advised to carry a water bottle, umbrella or hat, comfortable walking shoes, and optionally, a notebook or sketchpad to record their impressions of these libraries.

Transportation between locations will be provided.

On May 3, 9.30 am to 2 pm. Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, Indiranagar, is the starting point.
