Bengaluru: Bengaluru police have arrested a security guard of a private company in Marathahalli for allegedly smuggling ganja from Odisha and selling it in the city for a higher price, sources said.
The police have identified the suspect as Durgaprasad, a resident of Marathahalli in southeast Bengaluru who hails from Odisha.
Investigators have seized 10kg of ganja worth a whopping Rs 4.40 lakh, according to the police.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect used to travel to Odisha quite often and bought ganja from his friends for a lesser price.
He would bring the contraband, concealed in a bag via bus or train, according to the police.
“He had developed a strong customer base in the city while working as a security guard. He used to sell them ganja for a higher price, claiming it to be of the best quality,” an investigator said.
On March 15, Marathahalli police received a tip-off about Durgaprasad selling ganja in a playground in a secluded place in their jurisdiction.
Acting on the tip-off, police arrived at the location and arrested Durgaprasad.
A Bengaluru court has remanded the suspect in judicial custody.
