The victim, identified as Venkatesh, used to sell artificial gold ornaments.

Preliminary investigation points to Ramu, his brother-in-law, as the prime suspect.

The police said the two had been drinking together on Sunday before the incident occurred in the railway station’s parking lot.

"The suspect is yet to be arrested. The motive will be clear once he is in custody," a senior railway police officer said.

Investigators said Ramu fled the scene after stabbing Venkatesh, who received first aid from an ambulance crew before being taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The police believe the murder took place late on Monday, as Venkatesh had spoken to his family the previous day.

"On Monday evening, another relative attempted to contact Venkatesh regarding a sale of the artificial ornaments. When there was no response, he inquired further and learned of his death,” an officer said.

The Bengaluru City railway police police have registered a case, and a team has been formed to track down the suspect.
