Legislative Council Chairman D H Shankaramurthy was treated at a private hospital after he bit his tongue while having food on Tuesday evening.

According to BJP MLC Ganesh Karnik, Shankaramurthy was having upma in his chamber in Vidhana Soudha around 7 pm, after the Council was adjourned for the day. He was finalising the agenda for the Council proceedings for Wednesday with his staff. He had not yet signed the agenda. His party colleagues as well as Basavaraj Horatti (JD-S) were present.

Shankaramurthy accidentally bit his tongue which began bleeding. Soon, duty doctors from the Legislator’s Home attended on him. As the bleeding did not stop, his staff and Karnik took him to Vikram Hospital, where he regularly goes for consultation.

Health check-up
Shankaramurthy, 75, is diabetic. Doctors at the hospital treated him, conducted a health check-up and allowed him to go home around 9.40 pm. He was treated as an outpatient, said Karnik. A host of senior BJP leaders including B S Yeddyurappa and K S Eshwarappa visited him.

The incident happened on a day when a notice by the ruling Congress seeking to move a no-confidence motion against him was admitted. Hence, there was speculation that this upset his health.
Karnik said, “In all probability, he will be attending the House on Wednesday.”
