The 27-year-old accused KA Murthy worked at a Bengaluru software company on a handsome salary, but became addicted to online betting, losing lakhs of rupees in the bargain.

His father, Annappa, was forced to sell their family property to repay Murthy’s debts. Still unable to overcome his addiction, Murthy turned to crime to make quick money.

He is accused of snatching gold chains from single women, including a recent incident at the Angala Parameshwari temple, and committing house burglaries in Konanakunte, Avalahalli, and Sadduguntarpalya.

A complaint was recently filed at the Magadi Road police station. Acting swiftly, the police arrested Murthy after he snatched a woman’s gold chain at the temple.

The police recovered 245 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs 16.75 lakh from him.

On June 17, he was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
