As part of the centenary celebrations of Century Club, the ‘25th Annual AITA Silver Jubilee Tennis Tournament-2017 for Men and Women’ was organised recently.
Nearly 250 players from across the country participated in the tournament, also known as the ‘25th Silver Jubilee Century Club Gokaldas Lifestyle Open Tennis Tournament’.
All of them put up a good game exhibiting brilliant sportsmanship.
Padmashri and Arjuna awardee, Prakash Padukone, was the chief guest on the occasion and distributed the prizes on the day of the finals. President of the club, Shoba Neelakantappa, presided over the function.
All the participants received the AITA points, trophy, certificate and scholarship amount worth Rs 1 lakh.
In addition, they also received valuable advice on putting up a good game and maintaining their health.
The markers and ball-boys, responsible for maintaining the club’s courts under Krishnamurthy and Vinod, were honoured along with the tournament director Niranjan
Ramesh.
The winner in the men’s category was Vignesh Perana Mallur from Andhra Pradesh while the runner-up was Mohammed Fahad from Tamil Nadu. The winner in the women’s category was Shivani Manjanna from Karnataka while the runner-up was Advaita Saravanan from Tamil Nadu. In doubles, the winners in the men’s category were Mohammed Fahad and Vignesh Perana Mallur with the runners-up being Nikshep B R and Yash Yadav.
The winners in the women’s category were Shivani Manjanna and Nikita Telkar with the runners-up being Matere Ishwari and Shamika Dhar.
The organising committee also honoured the tennis legends of the city, state and country soon after the prize distribution in the club premises. This included Dechu Moola, Chere Surendra, Udaya Kumar, Mahesh Bhoopathi, Rohan Bopanna and Zeeshan Ali.
In addition, a few stalwarts who have encouraged the game both directly and indirectly in Bengaluru were also felicitated, including Leela Shanthamallappa, G K Sangameswar, Atul M Gurjar, H A Nagaraja Rao, Mohan Gurjar and B R Priyadarshi.
