Bengaluru: In a harrowing hit-and-run case, a car crashed into two women in Gollahalli on the Yelahanka-Hindupur state highway on the outskirts of the city on Thursday afternoon.
One woman was killed on the spot and the other sustained minor injuries.
According to the Doddaballpur Rural police, the crash occurred around 2 pm.
The car, which bore an Andhra Pradesh registration number plate, was speeding and swerved to the side of the road and climbed onto the footpath, before crashing into two women plucking flowers in their backyard near the road. The area of the crash is about four kilometres from Doddaballpur town.
“A woman named Nagarathnama, aged 42, was killed on the spot. Her neighbour, Nagarathna, 38, who was with her, sustained minor injuries. The deceased woman was flung about 30 feet away from where she was,” a police officer said.
Police noted that the airbags in the car were deployed, indicating that the crash was high-impact. However, the driver and any passengers with him had fled from the spot before the police arrived at the scene.
Police are yet to ascertain if any mechanical failure caused the crash.
The road does not have any metal or concrete crash barriers.
“We have filed an FIR for rash and negligent driving and causing death by negligence. We have also noted that the driver has fled from the spot. Investigation is on,” the officer added.
