If things go well for St John's Medical College in the City, many more students are likely to get an opportunity to study medicine in the institution from the next academic year.
The college has sought an increase in seat intake from the existing 60 to 150 for MBBS courses.
Fr Lawrence D’Souza, Director, St John's Medical College, told mediapersons on Thursday that the college had sufficient infrastructure to provide quality education for an additional intake.
“We have applied for the increased intake. Permission has to be given by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It will undertake its course as per the set procedures of the Medical Council of India and the government.
If it comes through it will be a gift for the college for the golden jubilee year.” The college is also planning to establish a clinical skill laboratory in order to train both faculty and students. The lab will have mannequins designed for students to gain skills in anatomy and other related topics.
This will be on similar lines to the existing lab at Bangalore Medical College. St John's officials said it would take a few more months to put this in place as establishing the infrastructure involved huge expenditure.
Meanwhile, the college is set to celebrate the valedictory of its Golden Jubilee Year on Saturday.
