There’s something about Priyani Vani’s voice that attracts her audience. If you have listened to songs from movies like ‘Players’, ‘Ferrari Ki Sawari’ and ‘Hum Do Anjaane’, you’ll know exactly what we mean.
She has been in the industry for quite a few years now and has seen the good, bad and weird. This includes a strange rumour about her being blind after the release of one of her songs ‘Ishaaron Ishaaron Mein’! But the singer remains focussed on her work and doesn’t let anything else affect her.
She talks to Anila Kurian about her journey in the world of music so far.
You’ve been in the industry for a while now. How does it feel?
This is where I’ve always wanted to be so I’m happy that I am living my dream. My father was a singer, so ever since I was three years old, I knew that I would also become a singer. The stage is always my home.
Any surprises along the way?
I expected everything that was thrown at me as my dad always warned me about it; he is my guiding light. After my first song, I didn’t have the next one in hand but I had no qualms about it. I was just thankful for the opportunity.
Do you have any projects lined up?
I have a few things lined up for YouTube and Facebook, because social media is a great platform to showcase your work now. Independent music is widely recognised there. I haven’t signed any film projects yet though.
Tell us about your viral song ‘Ishaaron Ishaaron Mein’.
My friends Abhas Joshi, Shreyas Joshi and I decided to sing the popular song from the film ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ just for fun. We shot the video on a camera phone, so the quality was low. Little did we know that it will turn viral. Interestingly, this fact has both pros and cons to it.
Yes, you were labelled as blind singers...
We first laughed when we saw this but then we started wondering if people liked the song because they thought we were blind! But I guess that’s the problem with social media — if one person says something, everyone else will believe it.
How do you respond to that rumour now?
We’ve all spoken about it many times and absolutely refuted the rumour that we are blind but I still get WhatsApp messages from time to time asking me about this. I just ask them to move on and help us move on too.
Is it hard to find time for personal needs with your schedule?
My schedule is not too bad, to be honest. I don’t take too much on because I want to spend time with my family, especially my three-year-old child.
What are your other interests, apart from music?
I love zumba and cooking. It’s hard to find something where music is not involved, so if there’s anything with music, sign me up!
