The fashion world is seeing a lot of trends from the yesteryears returning and fitting in with the modern styles. From outfits and shoes to jewellery, fashionistas have seen an impression of the past few years in what they wear and how they look. The recent trend which is making people go head-over-heels is the choker necklace.

It was in the 90s when the trend first found popularity among women. Back then, chokers were just a simple strap around the neck. But as it is said, fashion evolves with time and this trend too went through a lot of transformation and can be seen in different styles, shapes and sizes.

Though a choker can look great with all outfits, the look in vogue is with denim and crop tops or with a bare shoulder dress. It is no more just a simple stretchy string around the neck. There are different kinds of it.

Shruthi Ojha, a young model says, “A classic black seems to be the most popular among chokers. I would prefer chokers over the heavy accessories any day. It’s simple yet gives an edgy and classy look. For a denim I would put a simple black or metal choker and for a gown  a choker with some motif is the best.”

“Gone are the days where you have to search for a  necklace that matches one’s outfit, but with chokers — it just goes with everything one wears,” she adds.

Amaya Khullar from accessory brand ‘Purab Paschim’ says, “This trend has resurfaced as this bauble can add an edgy vibe to any outfit. It can add a splash of style to a sassy flowing gown and can also look ultra chic with a simple slip dress.”

The trending chokers, she points out, are the velvet ‘chokers’, silk ribbons, leather strings and the metal studded ones. She says that this time, they are not limited to just black or gold but the colours are the varied rainbow hues. “The best part about a choker is that it can be worn with either a formal attire for special occasions, on a classy evening or even on a regular day with one’s torn jeans and an off-shoulder top.”

Though she says that there is no age bar to sport this accessory, it is gaining popularity among teenagers and is also much sought-after by the middle-aged. “The trick lies in styling it right and pulling it off according to the outfit and occasion.”

Archana Suresh, a professional, opines that chokers may be in or out of style but they can never lose their charm in the fashion world.

She says, “The choker trend is definitely a blast from the past. I remember how popular they were when we were growing up and now this trend has resurfaced. I love wearing chokers as they accentuate my neck and add a fun retro look. Celebrities have been sporting this gorgeous accessory and I think that’s another reason it’s making a comeback.”

Nihali Dechka, a student of Christ University, feels that chokers are a fine piece of art. It is one of those simple yet elegant pieces of jewellery that can be sported on any occasion.

She says, “I sport a ‘choker’ most of the times, especially when I am attending a function or going out for brunch with friends. Its antique look makes me feel elegant and goes well with any attire.”

She also says that sporting a choker can be a style statement in itself as one can look great without any other makeup.

Echoing similar sentiments, Shwetha S Shetty, another student, says that chokers can change the entire look of an outfit. It gives a bold and Bohemian look and is one of the simplest accessories that should be a staple in every woman’s wardrobe.

“A simple choker can change one’s entire look even when they are not wearing something grand.  I think it is a good decision to wear and have one.”
