An engineering student was so dejected after his girlfriend dumped him for another man that he committed suicide at a lodge at Majestic in central Bengaluru.

Sunil J S, 20, a third-year student at the Government Engineering College, Karwar, allegedly hanged himself with a bedsheet tied to the ceiling fan of a room at Shree Lodge, police said.

Sunil, a native of Holenarasipura, Hassan district, had come to Bengaluru on February 13 after lying to his family that he was going to Karwar. The next morning, the hotel staff noticed that the door of his room was bolted from inside and that he was not responding to knocks or phone calls.

They called up his relative, whose number was given during the check-in, and explained the matter to him.

Harish along with Sunil’s brother Anil J S rushed to Bengaluru. The hotel staff and the police later broke open the door only to find Sunil hanging.

According to police, Sunil fell in love with his classmate Arpitha while studying at the Taralabalu Jagadguru PU College. They were in a relationship for two years until Sunil moved to Karwar. Arpitha joined a college in her hometown, Arsikere.

Sunil had come home recently for a 15-day vacation. He learnt Arpitha had become close to her classmate Bharath H S, a resident of Bengaluru. Sunil was dejected and left for Bengaluru.

Police found a suicide letter on a table in the hotel room. It read: “Arpitha is my lover and since Bharath H S has threatened me over my life, I am taking the extreme step. I was in love with Arpitha for the past two years. Now she doesn’t want me and is in love with Bharath. They both had even threatened me that they will offer supari and eliminate me, and Bharath along with his associates had earlier assaulted me. Both of them need to be punished.”

Police believe Arpitha and Bharath had been conspiring to eliminate Sunil. Based on the death note, Anil filed a complaint with the Upparpet police who have booked both Arpitha and Bharath for abetment to suicide. No arrests have been made.
