The arrest helped crack two cases — one in Hulimavu, Bengaluru, and the other in Vijayanagar, Mysuru.

The police began the investigation after residents of Akshaya Nagar filed a complaint on June 25, reporting gold and silver was stolen from their homes between June 22 and 24.

Based on credible information, the suspect, Channagopal, was apprehended on July 19 near Basavanapura bus stand with the stolen silver articles.

Further interrogation revealed his role in both the thefts, along with an accomplice.

Channagopal confessed to distributing some of the stolen gold to friends in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, and JP Nagar, Bengaluru, selling some to Benaka Gold Company, and hiding the rest under a tree near a vacant plot beside NICE Road on Bannerghatta Main Road.

The police recovered 136 grams of gold ingots and 1.653 kg of silver articles between June 24 and 30.

Channagopal was produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody on June 30.

The search for his accomplice is ongoing, the police said.
