A 28-year-old school teacher, identified as M P Sumathi, was found hanging in a classroom at the Ashok International Public School where she was teaching in Kammagondanahalli near Gangammanagudi on Tuesday.

A senior police officer said the incident came to light on Thursday morning when housekeeping staff came to clean the classroom and found her hanging from the ceiling.

Sumathi is believed to have entered the LKG classroom on Tuesday evening and committed suicide. Since Wednesday was a holiday for Eid, the incident came to light only on Thursday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Sumathi married Nagaraja, an interior designer in Chennai, five years ago. Nagaraja use to visit her once in a month at Jalahalli, where she was staying with her parents.

The police said Sumathi’s parents called her colleagues on Tuesday when she did not return home, but received no response. They assumed she was off to Chennai to visit her husband.

Sumathi’s parents attributed her suicide to her depression over not having a child, about which she frequently cried. But the police did not find a suicide note at the spot.
