Telgi seeks leniency in sentence

wAppearing via video conferencing from Parapana Agrahara central jail here, he told Judge Chandrashekar Patil that he suffers from "serious" diseases, needs to marry off his only daughter and that his wife is on "death bed".

"My health is deteriorating day-by-day," Telgi said, adding, he had been in judicial custody from November 2001.

Telgi and 19 others were convicted by the special court on Wednesday in a case which came to light when one of Telgi's associates Baddrudin was arrested while transporting the fake stamp papers, subsequently leading to unravelling of the scam.

All the 20 convicts today pleaded for leniency with some submitting that they were new entrants to Telgi's firm and a few others pointing out that it's their first offence.
The Judge adjourned the case to February 17 when the quantum of sentence is slated to be pronounced.
