Bengaluru-based theatre group Arena Productions will be staging an adaptation of Afghan American author Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner.
The play is directed by Tahera and will premiere in Bengaluru this weekend. It is set against the backdrop of the Soviet Afghan War and the rise of the Taliban regime. It follows the friendship between a wealthy boy Amir and his father’s servant’s son Hassan. Tahera read the book about 15 years ago and was moved by it. She says the book has a lot of “scope for stage”.
“It’s a beautiful story about two friends and how their life changed,” she says. Tahera wanted to highlight the themes of friendship, redemption, love, faith, class system and oppression in the play, as seen in Hosseini’s work.
Her play is based on the theatre adaptation by American playwright Matthew Spangler of San José State University.
The play will feature actors Syed Saad, Subharathi Kundu and Sheiraphi Silda Thangkhiew.
Arena Productions has earlier adapted Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and Anton Chekhov's 'The Seagull'.
‘The Kite Runner’ on April 5, 3 pm and 7 pm at Good Shepherd Auditorium, Museum Road. Tickets online.
