INSPIRING Sindhu Loknath
Sandalwood actress Sindhu Loknath is always looking to try new things. With experimental movies becoming the new rage in the Kannada film industry, the young actor wanted to try her luck too. In a tete-a-tete with Tini Sara Anien, Sindhu talks about her latest untitled project.

When did the movie happen?
I heard about the project a month back and we started shooting only 4 days ago. This has been my fastest moving project but it’s an experimental one and I’m really nervous. The script is very interesting and almost 75% of the shoot is done. It is by a new director, Vikram Yoganand, who is an ad-film maker. I’m working with a new team in this movie and I’m very excited.

About the movie...
The project is very interesting — the story happens between 6.30 am and 9 am and the runtime of the story is also 2 and a half hours. The story is about a girl who leaves her house at 6.30 am and the series of events that take place after that. She is supposed to get engaged on the same day, but she wants to pursue big goals. She meets a lot of interesting people while she is travelling — some of them encourage her to follow her dreams while others pull her down.

The highlights of the project...
The timeline is interesting. The movie is shot everyday between 6.30 am and 9 am, so that the lighting matches in every scene and there is not much traffic. There is no hero in the movie and the central character is the girl played by me. There are no cuts in the movie, as in other films. When a scene is shot, it is shot at one go. There are also no wide or innovative camera angles involved in the project as this story is shown how a viewer would see it. The movie ‘Birdman’ was shot in the same way.

What were the preparations involved?
I never knew that I could memorise all my lines so efficiently. It’s just like in theatre, where one has to be aware not only about one’s own lines but also about other’s lines. There are myriad emotions that the character goes through — she feels confused during her journey and her thoughts are split between pursuing what she wants and getting married and settling down as a housewife. The emotional toll is an interesting space to explore.

How close are you to your role?
My character talks to everyone she meets on her journey and narrates to them the complexities that she is going through. She doesn’t think twice and is very lively and enthusiastic. On the other hand,  I’m an introvert and don’t talk to everyone I meet. (Smiles) But my character is very close to me as I feel like I’m her even after the shoot is done for the day.

Are you excited or nervous?
It’s a mix of both! I am really glad that I could experiment with a project like this as this is the age of experimentation. Movies like ‘Thithi’ and ‘U-turn’ are making heads turn. I am looking forward to see the audience’s response.
