Late Wednesday evening, severe thunderstorms and intermittent rains lashed Bengaluru, bringing the city to a halt.
Meteorologists said the rains were uniform across the city, though parts of North and South Bengaluru witnessed rainfall ranging from heavy to rather heavy.
Rains along with gusty winds, spanning a few hours, brought down about 10 trees in different parts of the city. Severed branches damaged power lines.
Officials at the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) control room said no major waterlogging was reported from any part of the city.
However, Vivek Nagar Main Road near St Joseph’s college was flooded. It was cleared in less than an hour by the BBMP’s Prahari team. A few busy junctions in the CBD area and Outer Ring Road witnessed waterlogging for a few hours.
About 10 trees were reportedly uprooted in areas including BEML Layout, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Nayandahalli, Nagarabhavi, JP Nagar, Ulsoor, Nandini Layout and other localities in Mahadevapura.
Left in darkness
Several areas fell into darkness as tree branches falling on the cables snapped the power supply forcing authorities to resort to power cuts at the same feeder, affecting thousands of citizens.
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) revealed that the highest rainfall was reported at Vigyan Nagar with 41 mm and HAL Airport with about 30 mm. Konanakunte (15.5 mm), Jayanagar (11.5 mm), Kumaraswamy Layout (23 mm), Doddanekkundi (26.5 mm), Sarakki (30 mm), Nandini Layout (16.5 mm), Basaveshwara Nagar (19 mm), Kodigehalli (17.5 mm), Doresanipalya (14.5 mm) and Mahadevapura (10 mm) received rainfall until 8:30 pm.
