In a tragic incident, a one-and-a-half-year-old girl child fell to her death from the balcony of her house on the second floor in Begur, Southeast Bengaluru, on Thursday afternoon.

Sophiya, the daughter of Balasubramanya and Lavanya, of Nanjundappa Layout, is the victim. The incident happened when the victim and her parents had come to Sophia’s grandparents’ house.

The balcony had a wall with two gaps, wide enough for the baby to slip through. While playing unattended in the balcony, she slipped through one of the gaps and fell to the ground and was lying in a pool of blood. When the parents realised she was not in the balcony, they ran downstairs, picked her up and rushed to St John’s hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The Begur police have registered a case of unnatural death and are inquiring with the parents and others in the building.

The gaps left in the balcony were part of the aesthetic design of the building. Police have requested the residents not to have such gaps and designs, big enough to risk children's life.
