Bengaluru: To prevent the entry of public vehicles inside the Jnanabharathi campus, Bangalore University (BU) is planning to construct a flyover connecting Mysuru Road and Ullal Main Road.
The university has placed this proposal before Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar during his recent visit to the campus. Sources from the university said that the proposal was submitted following an increase in vehicle density inside the campus, which has been disturbing regular academic activities.
"It has become an everyday struggle to take classes and also for students to concentrate due to the movement of vehicles. Noise pollution has increased, causing disturbance to academic activities," said an official source from the university.
Lokesh Ram, a PhD scholar at the university, said, "We witness one or the other accident daily and many of our students residing in the university hostels are becoming victims of such accidents. How can we forget postgraduate student Shilpashree who died in an accident inside the campus two years ago?"
Stressing the need to stop the entry of public vehicles into the campus, another PhD scholar, Govinda Raju K, stated that even the student community has been repeatedly urging the authorities to ban public vehicles inside the campus.
"Even at midnight, the vehicle flow is the same inside the campus. Students are struggling to study during night hours. During morning hours, walkers and joggers get into the campus in their vehicles, park them and walk. We also demand that it be banned. Construction of a flyover will definitely put an end to all these," Raju said.
Garbage issue
The students also highlighted the garbage issue inside the campus. "We see people enter campus in cars and bikes to throw garbage. If this continues, we students will be forced to act as marshals and stop them at the entrance itself," said another student.
The authorities of the university said they would soon submit an official proposal to the government after discussing it in the syndicate. The distance from Mysuru Road to Ullal Main Road is around 2.5 km.
When asked, Higher Education Minister Dr MC Sudhakar said: "The construction of a flyover inside the Jnanabharathi campus is under discussion and we will take a final decision soon."
