A group of passengers assaulted and pushed a travelling ticket examiner (TTE) out of the Yeshwantpur-Howrah Superfast Express near Katpadi Junction during the early hours of Thursday after they failed to pay a fine for not carrying a valid identity proof for travel.

The TTE, identified as Santhosh Kumar from Bengaluru, was injured in the incident and is doing fine now after treatment, railway police officials said.

It all started when the TTE, who was checking tickets of passengers in the S12 coach, found that two people did not possess valid identity proof. "When the TTE insisted that they either show the proof or pay a fine, they got enraged and began attacking him. They were joined by four others who also assaulted the TTE and pushed him out of the train," a railway police official said.

After the incident, Kumar filed a complaint with the Railway Police, who immediately alerted their counterparts in the Chittoor station about the incident.

"At Chittoor, Manik (19), was arrested and he has been brought to Katpadi for investigation. A manhunt has been launched for the remaining five," the official said.

Manik has been remanded in judicial custody and lodged in the Vellore prison.
