Bengaluru: Two people were killed in separate road crashes involving speeding lorries in Bengaluru since Sunday night.
A 50-year-old Kolkata native named Saraj Pal was killed in a collision with a lorry on Kasavanahalli Main Road while en route to his home in Naganathapura.
He reportedly worked as a karate coach in the city and was returning from Sarjapur around 8.30 pm on Sunday, said an officer from the Bellandur Traffic Police Station.
"The lorry was on the right side of the victim, who was on a bike. The lorry must have touched the back of Pal's bike, causing him to fall to one side. The lorry's wheels went over him, and he died on the spot," said the officer.
Fearing public retaliation, the lorry driver fled the scene and was absconding as of Monday night. "We have seized the vehicle and have also traced the owner. A case has been filed for rash and negligent driving and causing death by negligence," the officer added.
Vasanthapura incident
In another crash at 6.15 am on Monday, a pedestrian was mowed down by a tipper lorry near a pre-university college on Vasanthapura Main Road in south Bengaluru.
Kesidevi, a 49-year-old homemaker who was walking on the side of the road, was killed on the spot. The driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
"The driver was found to be driving in a rash and negligent manner. He was detained, and his blood sample has been sent for forensic testing to determine alcohol consumption. We have filed a case against him and seized his vehicle," said an officer from Kumaraswamy Layout Traffic Police Station.
