Three-year-old victim of medical negligence, Mariyam Kouser was discharged on Thursday after the hospital bills exceeded the family’s capacity.

According to the child’s relatives, Kouser was taken back home from Malathi Manipal Hospital though she had not recovered completely. A family member speaking to the media on Sunday said that the amount spent on Kouser’s treatment had crossed Rs 30 lakh. “The family could not afford treatment beyond this and hence requested for a discharge,” he said.

Besides, to meet the needs, Kouser’s father who had an AC fitting business, sold his house in south Bangalore and moved to one in Hoskote. A source in the family added that they had been trained by a team of doctors to feed the girl through tube and a hospital-like set-up has been created in the house.

Mariyam Kouser was allegedly  administered an overdose of anaesthesia at the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Orthopaedics that resulted in hypoxia. The child’s condition has been critical ever since.
