Here is some good news for the residents of Vidyapeetha ward in Basavanagudi Assembly constituency.

Residents of Chennammanakere Achchukattu in the ward are a happy lot as they no longer wake up to the stench that used to emanate from the garbage dump on the Channammanakere Achukattu Main Road, thanks to Chief Minister’s pet project- Indira Canteen.

The government’s subsidised food outlet is now coming up on what was till recently an illegal garbage dump.

It has been almost a week since the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) started the construction of the canteen on the busy Channammanakere Achukattu Main Road, connecting Kamakhya cinema and Vidyapeetha Circle.

Unlike in other areas of the city, where residents have come out in protest against the BBMP and the state government for building canteens after encroaching upon many parks and playgrounds, the residents of Channamanakere Achukattu, an upper middle-class locality are singing a merry tune since the Indira Canteen project has driven off the filth that had accumulated in the neighbourhood.

In the absence of public toilets in the area, people were using this garbage dump to relieve
themselves.

Speaking to DH, Savitha, a local resident, said, “People used to dump all kinds of waste here and this was the only place in the neighbourhood which was an eyesore. There have been times when even the pourakarmikas used to throw garbage here. On many occassions waste had been set on fire too. All that can be avoided now.”

Saraswathi, another resident, hailed the project saying, “Selection of this place is a good move by the BBMP. I think they should look for more such places in all the wards instead of encroaching upon playgrounds where the children come and play.”
