It was a dream come true for a few while it was an occasion to celebrate for many others.

The convocation of the Indian Institute of Science at J N Tata Auditorium on Wednesday turned out to be a meet of brilliant minds across India. Some candidates had brought their parents while some were accompanied by their spouses.

The main attraction of the event was the presence of two Majors and a Lieutenant Colonel of the Indian army.

Major Saurabh Sharma, Major Shantanu Kaushik and Lieutenant N S Dhabi received the certificates for obtaining ME in Signal Processing.

Three challenges for them to get seats for the course were to clear written tests, interviews and excellent service records. They had to clear another round of interview by IISc authorities once the Army cleared their candidature for higher studies.

Sharma hails from Mathura, while Dabhi and Kaushik are from Delhi.

The officers said the postgraduation course has enhanced their employability skills and they are exposed to newer areas. They said they want to use it while serving in the Army.

They said they once again got into an educational institution for learning after a gap eight years.

Guhaprasad N, a scientist with Defence Aviation Research and Establishment, joined the PG programme 14 years after his graduation.

It was a proud day for Shilpa Dilip Kumar who got a certificate for completing PhD. “I left Canada for Bengaluru only to realise my dream of studying at IISc,” she said.

“I feel honoured today. The dream came true with the help of support of family members and friends,” she said.

Priyanka Gupta, a native of Kolkata, joined IISc to study masters and bagged a gold medal.

She said owes her success to hard work and parents’ support.

Only 1 medallist from last yr turns up
There were 52 medal winners in different subjects from the previous year.

However, only one man — Deepak — turned up. The institution said the remaining 51 medal winners could not make it as they were working abroad.
