The traffic police (East Division) on Friday announced the closure of Panathur Main Road for 21 days to facilitate white-topping taken up by the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
However, the announcement triggered public backlash as the alternative routes suggested by the police are in poor condition. Residents also criticised the authorities for taking up the project without prior public notice.
Many commuters said they learnt about the road closure only after setting out for the day, leading to severe traffic chaos. “When I left this morning for grocery shopping, I realised the road was closed and already a water tanker had entered the alternate road, blocking nearly 50 two-wheelers,” said Pawan Roy, a resident.
Responding to the complaints, Additional Commissioner (East) Lokhande Snehal Sudhakar said, “We have coordinated with the traffic police. We will close one side of the road, and the police will ensure a smooth flow of traffic with minimum disruption.”
