Built at a cost of Rs 44 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM), the TTMC features three bus bays with six platforms, parking facility for 100 two-wheelers and 350 four-wheelers and more than four floors of office space for both government and private enterprises. While Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has already completed the TTMCs at Jayanagar, Kengeri, Bannerghatta and Shantinagar, those at Vijayanagar, Banashankari, Yeshwanthpur, Koramangala and Domlur are in the finishing stages.
Centre’s funding
The TTMCs have been envisaged to reduce congestion on the main roads by providing first/last mile connectivity. This is done by encouraging commuters to leave their personal vehicles at the TTMC and then take a bus to their destination. The 10 TTMCs have been developed at a total cost of Rs 480 crore.
The Centre has funded 35 per cent of the project cost, while the share of the State Government and BMTC are 15 per cent and 50 per cent respectively.
Ashok said that BMTC was one of the best bus services in India. “That is why no other state in India has been given TTMC projects other than Karnataka. We have revolutionised the concept of a bus stand. Bangalore should be proud of this fact,” he said.
On future plans, the minister said that BMTC was planning to increase the number of buses in its fleet to 10,000.
He said that he wanted to reduce the current average waiting period for a bus from 10 minutes to 5 minutes at every stop. Only by increasing public transportation, can we help in saving the environment, he added.
