The FIR was registered on June 28 following a complaint by Manjula BS, 42, from Shankarapura, who exchanged her mangalsutra for the coins.

Manjula stated that on June 24, the suspect approached her on DVG Road while she was shopping. The woman handed her a coin and asked her to check its weight at a nearby jewellery shop as she wanted to make ornaments.

The jeweller informed Manjula that they lacked a machine to verify authenticity, but said it resembled gold and weighed about 1 gram.

The suspect then gave Manjula 10 coins, claiming they were gold, and persuaded her to exchange them for her mangalsutra, valued at Rs 3 lakh.

Later, another jeweller confirmed the coins were brass. Realising the fraud, Manjula filed a police complaint, and a probe is underway.
