Woman ends life over dowry harassment

A 23-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling at her residence in Nyanappanahalli in Hulimavu on Wednesday night.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Ramya. Four years ago, she was married to Bharath, an autorickshaw driver and they have a two-year-old daughter. They are both natives of Hassan and had moved to the city a few years ago.

On Wednesday evening, Ramya, who was working at a stationery shop located near Indian Institute of Management (Bengaluru), hanged herself from the ceiling at her residence. The incident came to light when Bharath returned to the house. He informed the matter  to the Hulimavu police and the family members, said the police.

After the body was shifted for postmortem, Ramya’s relatives and family members approached the police and accused Bharath of torturing her to get dowry. They claimed that she was upset about this and committed suicide. While Bharath claimed that Ramya was suffering from several ailments. They both, quite often, had a fight on her visiting doctors frequently. This disturbed her and she ended her life, the police added. 

A case has been registered in Hulimavu police station under section 304 (B) (Dowry Death) and Bharath is being questioned.
