Bengaluru: A 37-year-old woman was allegedly attacked and robbed by two men near KR Market in central Bengaluru on Sunday night, the police said.
Senior officials have refuted media reports suggesting it was a case of gang rape.
"Based on a complaint of sexual assault and extortion, a case was registered," Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda said.
A senior officer said the suspects — identified as Saravan, 35, and Ganesh, 23 — engaged in consensual sexual acts with the woman after promising her money. They later quarrelled with her, snatched her mobile phone, and stole Rs 650 in cash before fleeing the scene.
Both suspects, who were homeless and worked odd jobs, were arrested, and produced before a magistrate, who remanded them to judicial custody. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
The police revealed that the woman, originally from Tamil Nadu, had come to Bengaluru about a week ago following a family dispute. She had been staying at mutts and rehabilitation centres in the city and was waiting for a bus to return to her brother's house on the night of the incident.
