An attempt to rescue a bird at the Lalbagh Botanical Garden  on Sunday proved costly for a 20-year-old youth as he fell from a tree and sustained multiple injuries.

Vishal, who sustained multiple fractures, was shifted to the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedics at Jayanagar for surgery.

The Siddapura police said Vishal, a resident of Wilson Garden, noticed an eagle entwined in the strings of a kite and was struggling to escape. Despite his friends' warning, Vishal climbed the tree to save it, and a branch broke. He fell to the ground from a height of 20 feet.

His friends rushed him to hospital, and the fire and emergency services personnel rescued the bird.

"Fortunately, there is no damage to his nervous system. However, he needs surgery," said Dr Chandrashekar H S, director of the Sanjay Gandhi institute.
