Tarikere former MLA B R Neelakantappa said that Government must take into consideration the well being of the farmers while implementing the project because it is a huge irrigation project being implemented using farmers’ money.
“The project will require huge quantity of electricity and considering the present electricity production and supply situation in the state, it is evident that this is an impractical project,” he said and added that neither will this project provide water to Chithradurga, Tumkur, Bellary district nor is storage of 21 tmc of additional water from river Thunga possible. Meanwhile, JD(S) State Vice-President H T Rajendra said that Bhadra reservoir is located 80 ft above Thunga river. The electricity used in entire district will be required to pump water to this height, he said opining that the project is unscientific.
District Congress President M L Murthy said that ruling party is following ‘divide and rule’ policy for the implementation of the project, thereby deceiving the farmers.
“Across the state fertile agricultural lands have been usurped for commercial purposes. It is a conspiracy,” he said and questioned the Government as to where will they bring the electricity required for the project.
District Raitha Sagha President Malurudinne Vinayak said that though there is provision to build canal in government land the project has been planned in such a way that the canals are laid through agricultural lands.
