Retired DG and IG of police Shankar Bidari, on Sunday, said, he plunged into politics to express his gratitude to those who helped him at the fag end of his career.

After receiving ‘Basavashri Award’ at Basava Jayanti celebrations, organised by BEML Kannada Samithi as part of their 22nd anniversary here, Bidari said, he is not fond of any material benefits like gold or land. “Personally, I am a happy man, with well-settled children. I don’t have any selfish motives in politics”, said Bidari.

Bidari said, people have been showering abundant love and respect towards him and it’s the result of his good deeds as a police officer.

On Basava dharma, Bidari said, people are ripping the dharma apart for selfish motives in the name of sub-sects. It is nothing but fatal to the very culture. Narrating instances of dividing dharma in the name of sub-castes like Banajiga, Reddy, Shetty, etc, Bidari stressed on equal treatment to all.

Saying that the 12th century revolutionary, Basavanna, who propagated Basava dharma has left behind ‘Anubhava Mantapa’, Bidari said, the followers of the revolutionary should take a leaf out of it and spread the message of harmony in the interest of the society.

Dharma is always for ensuring justice, that’s the reason why one should practice ‘Work is worship’ (Kaayakave Kailasa), the famous adage of Basavanna. Citing his own example, Bidari said, never did he indulge in works that went against Basava culture.

General manager (retd) of BEML C B Basavaraju was presented with ‘Kayakashri Award’.
