Mangaluru: An FIR has been registered at Barke Police Station after two individuals on a scooter threw a packet into the premises of the district prison on Sunday.
In a complaint, jail authorities said that at around 3.30 pm on Sunday, unknown individuals arrived on a scooter near the main road outside the district prison and threw a suspicious object into the prison's quarantine area before fleeing the spot.
Shekhar DK, a KSISF officer assigned to duty in the prison witnessed the incident and informed the KSISF police inspector. The inspector immediately reported the matter to the jail superintendent. Upon reviewing the CCTV footage, it was observed that at around 3.35 pm, an undertrial prisoner named Rafiq from quarantine block 1, cell 9, retrieved the package. Acting swiftly, the complainant, along with on-duty officers, conducted a search of Cell 9 and recovered one mobile phone, three cigarette packets, one lighter, one soybean plastic packet and a tea powder packet. Torn newspaper pieces used for wrapping the items were also recovered. Following it, a case was registered.
In fact, former Mayor Kavitha Sanil witnessed the incident while driving along Jail Road.
"I saw two individuals on a scooter throwing a package inside the jail compound. I immediately followed them in my car, trying to intercept them. However, they managed to escape through narrow lanes. The scooter had a number plate, but the numbers were not visible," she told reporters.
Kavitha Sanil also expressed suspicion about the contents of the package. She has urged authorities to take strict action to curb such activities in the jail premises.
