Bengaluru: Information Technology and Biotechnology Minister Priyank Kharge on Sunday accused the BJP, RSS, and VHP of fomenting unrest and polarising communities across the state.
He alleged that over the past two decades, these groups have institutionalised the spread of hate speech and fake news, turning disinformation into an organised industry backed by the BJP.
“Not just the coastal region, areas such as Hubballi, Dharwad, Belagavi, and the Malnad region have become laboratories of hate,” Kharge told reporters.
Criticising these outfits for inciting social tensions and misleading the youth into anti-social activities, particularly driving wedges between religions, Kharge pointed out the stark socio-political divide, highlighting that while these groups incite unrest, the children of influential leaders from these outfits continue to progress elsewhere in the country.
Rejecting accusations against the Congress party, the minister firmly stated, “It is not Congress that spreads hate; it is BJP that uses these tactics. Have these parties contributed positively to anyone’s career? The answer is no.”
Responding to a question, he said that the government’s making all efforts to combat fake news and misinformation.
He noted that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara to take proactive steps against the spread of false information that disrupts social harmony. “The home minister has also personally discussed these issues with me, and we are in the process of framing comprehensive laws to contain all forms of disinformation,” he added.
Kharge emphasised the state government’s vision to drive Karnataka toward rapid and inclusive development by attracting investment and improving essential services such as education and healthcare.
On Operation Sindoor, Kharge questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approach to international relations, particularly his perceived hesitation to confront US President Donald Trump’s repeated trade threats and tax impositions. “If the prime minister is truly focused on India’s interests, why does he shy away from taking a strong stand against foreign powers threatening our trade and economy?” he asked.
