The two national parties, BJP and Congress, appear to be vying with each other in extending relief to those affected due to floods in Kodagu.
Hours after the state BJP said all its MPs, MLAs and MLCs will donate their one-month salary, the KPCC announced that its elected representatives will donate two months’ salary for flood relief.
“The damage that is caused in Kodagu on account of flood is something beyond anybody’s imagination. The people are finding it extremely difficult to lead their day-to-day normal life. It is out bounden duty to rush to the help of the people who have lost their homes and property,” state BJP president B S Yeddyurappa said in a release.
He urged the government to take up relief and rehabilitation works on a war-footing. Elected representatives of both the parties will donate their salary to the chief minister’s relief fund.
Leaders of both the BJP and the Congress have been collecting relief materials and donations from public for the affected district.
The staff of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiac Sciences are donating a day's salary to the relief fund. In a similar move, KSRTC staff as well are giving a day's salary amounting to Rs 11.80 cr. The members of the Karnataka State High School Assistant Teachers' Association and Federation of University and College Teachers' Associations in Karnataka are also donating a day's salary towards the CM's relief fund.
