Bangalore continued to top the list in recording the highest number of counterfeit cases in the State.

According to sources in the Police department, out of the total 84 cases reported in the State, 41 were recorded in Bangalore, followed by six in Mangalore. The counterfeit cases include cases where fake currency and products have been detected.

“Percentage change in 2012 over 2011 showed a decrease by 20 per cent, with the highest number of cases reported in Bangalore City (41), followed by Mangalore City (6), Karnataka Railways (5) and Hassan district (4),” sources said, adding that these four units contributed about 66.67 per cent of the total cases reported in Karnataka.
Belgaum, Bellary and Davangere had recorded three cases each, while Uttara Kannada, Shimoga and Gadag reported two cases each.

A case each was reported from Hubli-Dharwad, Bangalore, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagara, Chikmagalur, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Haveri, Bellary, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu and Mandya districts, while no cases were reported in the other districts.

In 2011, of the total 105 cases reported, Bangalore accounted for 60, which is more than 50 per cent of the total cases reported in the State. This was followed by Mangalore City (7), while Hubli-Dharwad and Dakshina Kannada reported four cases each. Raichur, Bellary and Chitradurga had three cases each, while Mysore, which has zero cases in 2012, had reported two cases.

According to information provided by the State Crime Records Bureau, Bangalore had recorded 72 such cases in 2010 of the 192 cases in State.

“So, if you assess the statistics carefully, Bangalore has been contributing nearly 50 per cent or more than that year-on-year,” an officer said.

In the same year, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Ramanagara accounted for 19, 16 and 11 cases respectively, while Belgaum and Mysore reported nine cases each.

Mangalore had not recorded even a single case, while Tumkur, Bellary, Karnataka Railways and Chikmagalur recorded five cases each.
