Bengaluru: Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has submitted its feasibility report on extending Namma Metro to connect Bengaluru and Tumakuru to the state government.
The proposed 59.5-km metro line along Tumakuru Road will have at least 25 elevated stations, with stops at key locations such as Nelamangala, Weaver’s Colony, Budihal, T Begur, Sompura Industrial Area, Dobbspet, Kyathsandra, Tumakuru bus stand, TUDA Layout, and Sira Gate—connecting Madavara (the last station on the Green Line) to Tumakuru.
The Hyderabad-based consultancy firm that prepared the study examined both the technical and financial feasibility of the project. The line is likely to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The report will soon be placed before the Cabinet for approval, after which a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared and submitted to the Centre.
Bengaluru Central MP P C Mohan alleged that the metro to nearby cities was an attempt to boost real estate prices.
“Suburban rail to Tumakuru costs Rs 100-Rs150 cr/km; metro costs Rs 350Cr/km. Real estate gains: Rs 1,000 Cr. Metro to Tumakuru, Hosur, Hoskote or Bidadi isn’t about connectivity, it’s just about boosting real estate prices. State govt will build nothing but derail suburban rail (sic),” he wrote on X.
MP says it is ‘stupid idea’ Reacting to this announcement Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya called this idea “stupid” and noted that the Karnataka government should instead focus on early completion of pending lines and densify the network inside Bengaluru. “Metro is to solve intra-city connectivity. Tumkur should be connected with RRTS or even suburban rail” he wrote on X.
