The dip in the minimum temperature over the past few days has signalled arrival of winter in the region. Though the days are warm and bright, and sometimes even uncomfortable, the evening temperatures have dipped.
The minimum temperature, which was 18 degrees Celsius on November 19, dropped to 16 degrees Celsius on November 24. People, especially motorcyclists, experience the chill during night hours, which forces them to dig out all woollen caps, mufflers from the closets.
The winter in Mysuru region usually begins in November and continues till the end of February. Weather is pleasant during this period and the minimum temperature can drop to as low as 10 degrees Celsius at the peak of the winter. The minimum temperature is gradually dipping, a trend that is likely to continue in the coming weeks.
Speaking to DH, C Govindaraju, Station Nodal Officer, Meteorological department, Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa (GKMS), Organic Farming Research Station, Naganahalli, Mysuru district, said, “The night temperature has dropped by two degrees over the past few days and mist is observed on the outskirts of the city. However, the light intensity was more during day times.”

The onset of winter is usually during November and is at its peak by mid December, when the temperature may drop to around 10 to 11 degrees Celsius. People may experience fog and misty mornings in December end and January.
According to GKMS, there will be no rainfall from November 23 to 27 in Mysuru district. The day temperature is expected to be 30-31 degrees Celsius and night temperature 16 -18 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity in the morning hours is expected to be 60% to70% and in the afternoon 35% to 40%.
Advice to farmers
The scientists at the research centre have advised the farmers to provide protective irrigation to the crops which suffer due to lack of moisture in soil. They have said to take up inter-cultivation in sown crops to conserve soil moisture and to control weeds. Spray a mixture of adhesive gum to control pest and disease during morning hours. Silk farmers and poultry owners should maintain optimum room temperature.
