Seven people died in a collision between a bus carrying passengers and a parked lorry three kilometres from Sira town (Tumakuru dist.) on NH-48. The lorry was parked in front of Jai Hind Dhaba on the highway.

The lorry that was parked on the left of the highway did not have indicators. The Hanuman Travels bus which was speeding rammed into the parked truck, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Savita Somashekhar (21), Anusha (7), Rathnamma Kumar (39), Sumalatha Lingaraju (21), Girijamma Devaraju (55), Shankar Eswarappa (38), Ashwathnarayana (40). As many as 16 passengers were wounded.

The passengers had set out on a pilgrimage to Sigandur Chowdeshwari temple on May 19. They were returning home to Sira on May 20 night. The mishap occurred when they were barely three kilometres from their hometown.

The injured passengers have been identified as Boothanna, Rangappa, Shantamma, Bharathi, Yashodara, Annapurneshwari, Jyoti, Veerabhadraiah, Nanjamma, Padma, Kenchamma, Ajeya, Thippeswamy, Nagamani, Ranganatha and Somashekar.
