The by-election to the Southeast Teachers’ constituency in the Legislative Council will be held between 8 am and 4 pm on Friday.

As many 17 candidates including T N Niranjan of the Congress, P R Basavaraju (BJP) and Ramesh Babu (JD-S), will test their electoral fortunes. There are 21,354 voters in the constituency spread over the districts of Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru, Chitradurga and parts of Davangere.

Voters should have registered themselves in the rolls prepared by the Election Commission of India and should have been a teacher in a secondary school or above for at least three years during the past six years.

The byelection has been necessitated following the resignation of Y A Narayanswamy, who was representing the constituency. He quit as MLC after being elected to the Assembly from the Hebbal constituency on a BJP ticket in the by-election in 2016.

Counting of votes for the Council by-election will be taken up on February 6.

The newly elected candidate’s term will last till June 21, 2018.
