Canine beauty contest held in Udupi

Nearly 195 dogs belonging to various Indian and foreign breeds had an exclusive ramp walk in the beauty contest held to judge the most beautiful and brilliant breed at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College grounds in the city on Sunday.

The dogs were made to undergo various tests to judge their capacity and to qualify for further rounds. 

It included simple warm exercise to a short run. The dogs were less aggressive, exhibited good behaviour, and were eager to follow the instructions tutored by their owners. 

The prices of the dogs participating in the contest ranged from Rs 25,000 to Rs 15 lakh. The competition was held in various age groups —  6-12 months (puppy), 13-18 months (junior), 19-36 months (intermediate) and open category for all dogs aged above 36 months. 

Apart from Karnataka, canine owners Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra participated in the event.

‘Bred in India,’ was held to encourage the exhibitors to breed better dogs within the country rather than encourage importing of the animals on regular basis. This category was open to all Indian breeds.

The dog breeds that took part in the contest are Pomeranian and Pug (toy group), Bull Terrier and Welsh Terrier (terrier group), Bull Dog, Dalmatian (utility group), Basset Hound, Beagle, Dachshund, Dachshund Miniature, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Whippet, Rajapalyam, Mudhol Hound, Rottweiler (hound group), Irish Setter, Golden Retriever, Labrador retriever, Cocker Spaniel, English Setter (gundog group), Boxer, Doberman Pinscher, Saint Bernard, Great Dane, Rottweiler, Siberian Huskie (working group) and German Shepherd, Belgian shepherd (pastoral group). 

The contest was organised by Karavali Canine Club, Mangaluru. The event also hosted 33rd All-Breeds championship.
