'Captain Abu Raed' to be screened today

Sahamatha Film Society, Mangalore, will screen ‘Captain Abu Raed’ on Sunday at Sahodaya at 6 pm. 

The movie is directed by Amin Matalqa. This is supposed to be the first movie from Jordan in the past 50 odd years .Captain Abu Raed was nominated for the academy awards. Captain Abu Raed (2007) is a Jordanian film set in Amman, directed and written by the Jordanian-American director Amin Matalqa. It was the first feature film produced in Jordan for over 50 years. Captain Abu Raed has received over 10 awards, and was also Jordan’s first ever Oscar entry.

Abu Raed was an airport janitor who finds a pilot’s hat in the trash, and pretends to be a pilot to the children in the village. However, one of the older boys, Murad is convinced otherwise and takes his friends to the airport to see what Abu Raed actually does. The children were heartbroken, but Abu Raed continued to leave a huge impact on all of their lives. He gives Murad the pilot’s hat as an apologetic gesture. 

Slowly, Abu Raed gets exposed to what goes on in Murad’s house, his father would often come home after a frustrating day at work and beat his wife and children. And, Abu Raed took it on himself to protect them from the father. Abu Raed helps them escape with the help of Nour, a wealthy female pilot.  After this escape, Abu Raed stays back in Murad’s house to confront Abu Murad and after that, no one hears or sees Abu Raed. The last few minutes of the film show Murad as a Royal-Jordanian pilot. The casts in the movie include Nadim Sawalha, Rana Sultan, Hussein Al Sous, Uday Qiddisi, Ghandi Saber, Dina Ra’ad-Yaghnam. The movie was released on July 3, 2009. The duration of the movie is one hour 35 minutes.
