Davangere: A moving car caught fire on the service road of the national highway near Kunduvada on Davangere outskirts, in the early hours of Thursday. Five passengers, including Mandya Lokayukta Inspector Hanumanthappa, escaped unhurt.

The fire broke out in the engine of a car heading towards Hubballi. The driver, who noticed it, immediately stopped the car and rushed out with the passengers. 

The car was travelling on the service road as highway work was going on near Kunduvada.

The police station received information about the fire at 1:55 am. “We rushed to the spot within 10 minutes. But the flames engulfed the car within a few minutes. We extinguished the fire in 20 minutes,” said Fire & Emergency Services Department personnel.

Lokayukta Inspector Hanumanthappa, Maddur Municipal Council member Siddharaju, businessman Chethan, Pramod and Krishnappa were travelling from Maddur to Hubballi in the car.

Highway traffic was disrupted for some time on the road following the accident, informed the traffic police.
