Chitradurga: Five people died on the spot and another seriously injured when an Innova car hit a lorry parked on the road side from behind on National Highway 48 near Tamatakallu in the taluk on Sunday.
Bengaluru-based retired BMTC employees Shantamurthy (60), Rudraswamy (52), Mallikarjuna (50), and Chidambarachar (50) died. The identity of the other has not been ascertained. Another person who was seriously injured has been admitted to the district hospital. All of them had gone to the Savadatti Renuka Yellamma temple and were returning after having darshan of the deity. The prasad from the Renuka Yellamma temple was scattered in the car.
A Tamil Nadu-based lorry moving towards Bengaluru was parked on the side of the road near Tamatakallu. An Innova car coming from behind hit the lorry directly. The car was crushed in half due to the force of the collision. The police said that the driver's reckless driving was the cause of the accident.
The bodies were sent to the mortuary of the district hospital. District Superintendent of Police Ranjit Kumar Bandaru and DySP Dinakar visited the accident site and inspected it. A case has been registered at the rural police station.
