Human values have collapsed due to a life of wealth, status and vanity, Karnataka Chalavadi Mahasabha Founder K Shivaram said here on Sunday.

Inaugurating the launch of village level branches of Bagepalli assembly constituency Chalavadi unit he said that poverty, untouchability and illiteracy is still prevalent.

“There is a need for leaders who can wipe out the tears of the downtrodden. Government officers and people’s representative should become a beacon of hope for the multitudes who live in the slums”, he said.

There are one-and-a-half lakh persons belonging to the Chalavadi community in the Chikkaballapur district. However, they do not have representatives at either district, taluk or village level.

“Organising a community does not mean that it is against any institution. It is meant to protect the interest of the community and fight for its rights. It is necessary for the Chalavadi community to be united to obtain the facilities provided by the Government”, Shivaram said.

A building of the Karnataka Chalavadi Mahasabha is being constructed in Bangalore at a cost of Rs 12 core. The Mahasabha will organise a massive convention in Chikkaballapur district.

Over one lakh persons of the community from various districts are expected to participate in the convention.

Earlier the members of the community went in a procession from H N Circle to KSRTC bus stand
accompanied by various cultural troupes.

They later culminated at the Government Girls High School.

Chalavadi Mahasabha district unit president Hanumaiah and General Secretary K N Narasimhaiah participated.
