A CID team led by SP Venkatesh collected information and documents of the case from the city police. They visited places where the suspect was shot at by police, besides spots where the girl was raped and murdered.

They also went to the KMCRI mortuary, where the slain man’s body has been kept. He reportedly hails from Bihar. “Efforts are on to trace relatives, friends or other acquaintances of the deceased,” said city police commissioner N Shashi Kumar.

“There are clear guidelines from the Supreme Court regarding such cases and we are following them strictly,” Kumar said. The postmortem of Ritesh Kumar’s body was conducted at the mortuary of KMCRI (Karnataka Medical College and Research Institute) and the procedure was videographed.

Belgaum MP and former chief minister Jagadish Shettar visited the girl’s house to console her parents. He urged the government to increase the compensation from Rs 10 lakh to at least Rs 25 lakh as the family is poor.
