Waste pickers will visit homes, shops, and commercial centres regularly to collect the waste. Citizens should cooperate by segregating the waste, said Civil Commissioner Dr Ramegowda.

Addressing presspersons recently, he said, “The waste should be segregated as dry, wet and throwaway waste. Vegetable and fruit waste, flowers, food leftovers and other kind of biodegradable waste comes under wet waste. This can be given to the waste collectors who visit homes every day.

“Paper, polythene, wooden, rubber, glass, leather and metal items, which can be recycled come under dry waste. These include wires, thermocol things, rags, and even woodwork items. Every house will be given a bag to collect such reusable things and the collectors will visit the houses weekly to collect the dry waste.

“Other things like old bulbs, batteries, paint, oil, fashion articles, pesticides, sanitary pads and bandages are put under throwaway waste. Throwing such things just any where is now considered illegal and also a punishable offense. Stringent action under the Karnataka Municipalities Act will be taken against citizens who throw such waste randomly,” he warned.

Use of polythene items within the Town Municipal Council administration limits has been banned, but there have been complaints of people using such items illegally, he said. “If citizens who learn of such use and sale provide appropriate information, they will be awarded 10 per cent of the fine charged on the guilty.”
