The Karnataka Institute of Cooperative Management is helping the cooperatives to upgrade their management skills.

The institute, at Sahakara Bhavana on Chamaraja Double Road in the city, has invited applications for a new batch of diploma in cooperative management. The six-month course commences on January 1, 2018. The institute provides a stipend of Rs 500 to SC/ST candidates and Rs 400 for regular candidates. Cooperatives from Mysuru, Chamarajanagar and Mandya districts can join the course.

The institute is a pioneer in Karnataka, probably the first such institute in the whole of India, established in 1956. The Karnataka State Cooperative Federation is the mother of all cooperative institutions in Karnataka. The general diploma in cooperation, the initial course since its establishment, was renamed in 2007 as diploma in cooperative management.

The course covers areas like cooperation, cooperative management, cooperative accounts and audit, cooperative acts and rules, credit and banking. It provides the students an opportunity to test their management skills and to expand their knowledge through related work experience.

The study tour, part of the curriculum, paves the way for the candidates to visit various cooperative societies. The observations provide the students a chance to practise the latest theories and approaches in cooperative management. There are five permanent teaching faculty in the institute and can accommodate 60 candidates.

"The classes are also beneficial for employees of cooperative societies and banks in upgrading their management skills and knowledge. The course has helped in bringing professionalism among the candidates," said L Swamy Gowda, principal of the institute.

"As part of the academic activities, computer awareness and training programmes, group discussions, debate sessions, etc, are conducted. The debate competition conducted every week plays a pivotal role in improving vocabulary and English communication skills of the candidates. The course structure does not comprise mere theory classes, but practical exposures too," said M Visweswaraiah, teaching faculty of the institute.

Any candidate with a pass in SSLC can apply before November 30. The interested candidates can contact Nirmal Paul at 0821-2520563.
